Training Wheels

The story, "The Deep Water," by William O. Douglas reminded me of a time in my life when I was also struck by fear. In my situation, my fear was riding my bike without the training wheels. I must have been about 7 or 8 at the time when my fear started. It actually seems like it was yesterday.

My aversion to taking off the training wheels started on a hot summer day. I was riding my bike in front of my house. A boy from down the street who was in middle schools came by and started to tease me. He was known as the neighborhood bully. All the kids my age were afraid of him. That day, he not only teased, he pushed me really fast until I feel off my bike and scraped my knee.

The following summer, my parents were really bugging me to take off the traning wheels. All the other kids in my neighborhood my age were riding without the baby wheels. All I kept thinking about was how much it hurt that time I fell and scraped my knees. I guess I would have to learn some time.

My dad took off the wheels, and held me by the waist and ran behind me as I peddled. I was doing great until he let go, Once again, I scraped my leg. My dad said maybe that is enough for one day. The next day, we tried again. Same thing. I did great until my dad let go. I was afraid I would never learn to ride.

The next day, my mom tried to help me. She said I needed to get more speed and learn to peddle on my own. Instead of going right on the street, this time our plan was to let me go down our hilly driveway. Mom was behind me holding my waist as I stared to pick up speed. Then she let go. This time, something was different. I was peddling on my own. I went further than ever before. I was so happy and proud. I went straight into the field across the street and my bike fell. This time, I did not get hurt, as the tall grass was a soft landing.

I went back up the driveway and did it again. All by myself this time. Right back into the field across the street. After several time, I was able to ride on the street

Pearl

I loved the book "The Pearl, " however, I did not like the ending . I thought it was too sappy . Throughout the story, Steinbech made good use of developing characters. In the end, I felt like it needed more closure to be called an ending. It would have been a lot more interesting if the reader actually saw good prevail over evil in more ways than the story showed. It seemed like something was missing.

It would have been a lot more interesting if the book took a different twist at the end. Instead of describing that Kino and Juana were walking back into town with their dead child in their bag, I would have liked it if they extended the story to include that they went back to their hut and had a proper burial for their baby, Coyotitoto. Then, a few days after the burial, Kino goes back to the cave where he threw away the pearl. He finds the pearl and looks into it and sees a vision that the doctor is laughing and is paying an unknown man to kill Kino and his wife.

The story would have been more interesting if it showed Kino running home and grabbing the rifle off the fireplace mantle. It would be nice to see the evil doctor's plan actually foiled and the tables turned on him. Kino could shoot the doctor before he does more harm. Then, he could sell the pearl to a decent buyer and take good care of his family. That way, the story is more complete.

what i think about the pearl

I would recommend this book the pearl by John Steinbeck. To anyone that likes intense action packed books . Although this book has a lot of action it is obvious to see that this book is tragedy . Because through the whole book all this stuff happens that is vary sad .Like Kino and Juana the main characters have a baby named Coyotito . And it gets stabbed by a scorpion.

Then they have to go to the doctor . But the doctor dose not wont to help they thou Because he dose not like Indian and he thinks Indians are filth and wont pay him . Also Kino dose not believe or trust the doctor but he dose not Know how to read. So he dose not know if he is getting ripped of or he is paying the right amount of money but he has to just go with his gut . So he dose what the doctor tells him .

What i think of this book so far .

I love this book so far. It is great there is a lot of mystery and I like mystery. Like some one broke into there hut but nothing was stolen .Also they don’t know who it is that broke in . I thought it was the doctor . Because when he came over he was looking around for the pearl .

How will the pearl will brake this family.

Ok well I know that the pearl will brake this family apart . There is only one why that will happen . it is that some one would steal the pearl and that would cause a lot of stress on the family .also it is really easy to see that the pearl will get stolen. Because there has already has been a brake in at there hut but nothing was stolen .
